To do it using free stuff I'd recomend

To copy and remove any copy protection (it'll make a DVD copy on your hard
disc) I use DVD Decrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.org.uk/)

[I prefer DVD shrink but it is hard to find a copy, and normally only
available via P2P software - look here if interested
http://dvd-shrink.download11.com/ }

And then auto gordian knot from http://www.autogk.me.uk/ to convert to divx.

Before people shout it is probably legal in the UK to make a backup of your
DVD for your own personal use - but you decide what you want to do.
