My Maps Feature Requests

Due to popular demand

My Maps are technically not a part of the API, but a lot of you, as heavy maps users, seem to have good My Maps feature requests.

Please follow this format:

Feature: Simpler URL's for sharing

Comments: When sharing a map, why not use the picasaweb.google.com/username approach for the map pages?

For example, my maps should open to http://maps.google.com/username, and a shared map should read http://maps.google.com/username/sharedmap

Requested by: matthewbaker

Supported by: String

Feature: saving of calculated routes by GoogleMaps

Comments: when using the feature "calculate route" of GoogleMaps it should be possible to save or store somehow such a routing-line [or a map with a line derivated by pulling at points of it]) so that it can be accessed and recalled at "self created" at  "my Maps" of GoogleMaps.

Up to now it seems possible only to save such a map via kml on a public webpage and recall it in GoogleMaps at "created by others" at "my Maps"

*******************************

Feature: More on "Our Maps"

Comments: This would be incredibly useful.  If it could be designed so as that each user would log in under their own log&pass, and have access to change only their work on the community map, that would be outstanding and would reduce malicious editing.  If the map creator could then have global admin rights to edit all user's work, we would have an ideal scenario.

Requested by: Randy

Feature: Show the address name in the marker

Comments: I would like it if we could see with a button the address in the popup or the tittle of the marker. Normally you introduce de address and print de MAP with the markers. You cannot see well where the markers are. If you have also the complete address in the info popup would be very helpfull. You can find one example of this here

Feature: Ability to copy maps

Comments: I would like it if we could make a copy of a map in My Maps so we could create variations on a theme.  If you

create a large map but want to show different objects for different reasons, or you want a back up map, being able to copy maps would really help.

Feature: Print Property Map Report

Comment: I would like to be able to map out multiple properties, and then print out a report which lists the names of all of the properties I mapped out in a legend format.  This could be done by number or letter.  This feature would be even more effective, if it sorted the properties in order based on distance from a spot on the map of my choosing.

For instance, let's say I wanted to map out all of the Chinese restaurants in relation to my house.  I tell the map where my house is.  I put markers on the map for all of the Chinese restaurants I want listed.  My Maps would then sort these locations by distance from my house, # them on the map and list them in a legend.

Feature:  Find a meeting place

Comments:  Allow the selection of multiple points on a map and then calculate/find a central location to all the entered points that meet a specified criteria, such as restaurants, bars, golf clubs, movie theatres, etc., creating a list that is sorted in order of distance from the central point.  Example: want to find a place to meet friends for golf that is between Toronto, Ottawa, and Renfrew.

Feature: Get the maximum zoom level available given coordinates

Comments: I'd like to have a getMaxZoomLevel(coordinates) function in order to know the maximum zoom level available with the sat-picture mode in a specific area. With this, I could avoid having a grey display on my map.

Requested By: C. EYQUEM

Feature: Convert directions to editable line

Comments: Fairly self explanatory, the obvious place to start from when creating a line is a previously calculated set of directions. You might want to include the directions directly into your map, but more likely to cut a chunk of it off, or edit it to reflect a shortcut, or change the colour and size etc.

Requested By: leemcg

Feature: Automatic clustering of overlapping markers

Comments: At zoomed out levels, markers close together overlap hiding one or more markers making them impossible to be seen unless sufficient zoom is applied to distinguish locations. Google Earth applies an effective solution to this tedious problem. The icons are determined to overlap and automatically changed to a single 'overlap' icon where on click, expands fireworks-like to show the underlying markers with lines indicating the original position. This appears cleaner to the viewer as if they have just uncovered more markers. Keeps the markers as markers, just un-hides them. It looks like MultiMap's API  solution (http://www.multimap.com/share/documentation/api/1.2/declutteringmarkers.htm) cluster one for overlaps, then upon click, becomes the grid-like cluster two dynamically, and cooler.

Feature: ability to put standardized sets of polygons onto a map (e.g. Countries, States, Counties, cities, census tracts, block groups, Zips 5-3, neighborhoods, etc.)

Comments: there no reason that people should have to draw basic known shapes by hand, the data for the shapes can come from a variety of governmental and NGOs,

this can be limited to some specific reasonable number of shapes per map

Requested By: kromkowski

Supported By:  raf ; Tom

Feature: Use of  googlespreadsheets to link data (and thus colors - through standardize use of Jenks natural breaks method, and other grouping methods) to standardized sets of polygons see above features request

Feature: be able to import data

Comments: I have used the Maps API to save some routes on my own server, but it would be much cooler to move that data to My Maps on Google.  I have all the coordinates; can I import them somehow??

Requested by:  Rob Nugen
Supported By: dwez

Feature: Doughnut Polygons (Polygons with Holes inside)
http://www.strumapgis.co.uk/htmlhelp/COMPLEXPOLYGONEDITOR.html
Comments: Trying to create boundaries with holes not supported
Requested By:Mapperz
Supported By:

Feature: Upload multiple placemarkers from a source (csv, xml, georss, kml, xls or google spreadsheet)

Comments: for the xml import, can you make it work with google calender (in other words, create a 'My Map' from a Public Google Calender - scottdaniel25@gmail.com

Requested By: Dave C, added by Mapperz; Jeffrey Martin ( jeff@prague360.com )

Supported By: Matt Penner (Especially KML, this is probably trivial), maismap, scottdaniel25@gmail.com, ehg / Helmut, dwez

Feature: Another vote for adding direct access via API to My Maps.

Comments: Right now you pretty much have to store kml data on your own server and write web services to save/serve up the data.  My Maps is awesome, but it is manual only, AFAIK.  This would be a very positive in opening doors for being able to incorporate Maps into larger applications in a straightforward, effective manner.

Requested By: Jon A

Feature: Multiple sidebars

Comments: To allow markers to be categorized.  Alternately, collapsable groups in sidebar (e.g. hotels, restaurants, ATM's, etc.) [raf]this would really help categorize the information.

Feature: Create placemarkers from lat/long coordinates in decimal and deg/min/sec format (for marine navigation markers)

Comments: To ease data entry

Feature: Support http links in placemarker descriptions

Comments: To allowdrill down web page referencing

Feature: Re-order placemarks when editing a map

Comments: If I want my placemarks, lines and shapes to appear in a particular order, I apparently have to create them in that exact order.  Heaven help me if I want to insert something into the list.
What I'd like is a way to drag and drop the icons the way I can re-order the widgets on http://www.google.com/ig.

[wayne] I want to tell a story, with google maps, of the places I've been, and share them with others. My problem is I don't necessarily remember all the details, in to order i need to, to tell the story. Help me tell my story, so I can change it to the way it really happened, regardless of the order that I remembered it.

Feature: An option to draw lines as great circles

Comments: Several of the lines I'm drawing represent trans-oceanic airplane trips.  I'd like to have the line better track the actual route without having to extensively edit the line by hand.

Feature: More useful icons: BEER (for a bar); dancing person; church / mosque / temple / synagogue; castle; school; and now that I think of it, the ability to import your own icons!

Comments: I want my "My Maps" map to have lots of different markers but I'm having trouble picking appropriate "different" ones.

(a [at present ] missing feature would help here too: creating and inserting your own placemarkers for maps on "my maps")

Feature: Get directions between markers by way of dropdown, as opposed to manual address entry (See WeddingMapper)

Comments: When you click on a marker and select Get Directions (To Here or From Here), I'd like there to be a dropdown where you can select other markers. Currently, you must manually enter the location instead of just selecting a descriptive marker name. See WeddingMapper to see what I'm asking for. Just click on any marker and get directions. You will see that there's a "Marker on Map" dropdown. This would make MyMaps more useful in terms of getting directions.

Oh, and if you implement this feature by late July, I'll send you a cookie.

Feature: Display title when hovering over a placemarker

Comments: I am using the new 'My Maps' to create a map of locations of all my friends spread across U.S. After creating the map when I hover over a placemarker it does not show the title of the placemarker. We should actually click the placemarker to see the title. Is there anyway that we could see the title with just hovering over it.

Feature: My Maps for groups - aka 'Our Maps'

Comments: Many developers are implementing sites that store collections of paths and places for groups of users, with registered users able to add to the collections. An example that I've been working on is: this collection of cycle routes and facilities in London. Frankly, about 80% of its intended functionality is included in My Maps. But currently My Maps can't be used instead because (a) only one user can add to/edit a map and (b) My Maps isn't scalable to handle 100's of routes/placemarks (eg with folding menus that I've included). (c) Users will probably want to import routes/paths from other sources, including GPS devices. So an 'Our Maps' is needed, based on My Maps but where several users can register and be allowed to change the maps, and with the other features I've mentioned as well.

Feature: Ability to lock placemakers and shapes in place.

Comments: When I save a placemarker from a search query. The location/address is usually going to stay static, but during the navigation of the map, one can accidently move the placemarker somewhere else. Unless there was a way to lock specific placemarkers in place.

Requested By: saashraf@gmail.com

Supported By: Mike, dwez

Feature/Bug Fix: When a placemarker is added from a search query, every line in the address (on the left frame) is merged with the next line, without any spaces.

Comments: 1.Find a search result (saashraf-1.jpg). 2. Click 'Save to My Maps' (saashraf-2.jpg). Leave address as-is (saashraf-3.jpg). Address is listed incorrectly on the left frame (saashraf-4.jpg). The only way to correct it is to hit return/enter after each line in step 3.

Update: After you save the My Map, the address reinserts spaces, but it will lose the commas it initially had in the search result.

Feature: Ability to add My Map to a web page. aka provide one step mashup capability.

Comments: This has to be one of the most requested features. Just look at all the sites popping up doing some magic stuff to let you embed my maps. I think my maps are cool but of limited use if they cannon be easily embedded in blogs or user pages.

Feature: Ability to set max placemarks shown at one time

Comments: I really want to have an easy setting that would allow me to change the maximum number of placemarks shown at any one time.  Because I have so many placemarks in one area and I am trying to look at clusters of information, limiting it to 100 or so doesn't really work for me (also, I've I want to see all the information in one broad over view, there is no way to icnlude it all)  Add that to the ability to move the order of the placemarks so that I can be very specific about the clusters I'm looking at.

Feature: Track the distance of a Line in MyMaps

Comments: I have been using MyMaps to track walking/jogging trips, and just for refence it would be nice to see an estimate of the length. I can see a few other uses for this as well, including drives, flights etc. The excact distance would of course require a whole lot of map points, but you would get the idea.

Feature: Provide Total Area for Polygon (Shape)

Comments: Presently, when you create/select a shape, the properties only give you title and description.  I would love to see the area of the created polygon.  Practical application: I could chart several locations (work, school, fitness center, hospital, apt/house).  Then create a shape to match these points.  The properties would tell me the total area of this group.  Then, I could play with the "what-ifs".  What if I moved to a new house/apt, worked out at a different place, changed jobs; how would this increase or decrease my total travel geography (plotted area).  I could click on the "Traffic" feature during peak times and see roughly how it relates to commute times.

Feature: Search within a defined Polygon (Shape)

Comments: Building on the distance tracking and total area of a shape.  It would be nice to search for restaurants, stores, etc. within a defined line or shape.  Practical application: I could plot locations for work, school, church, places I will travel to daily, plot a polygon, then search the polygon using houses for sale/rent/foreclosure within Google's search.  Additionally, I could increase the range by adjusting to search to include areas (1, 2, 5, 10, 15 miles) surround the shape.

Feature: Ability to define a circular area by setting a point and specifying a radius

Comments: I would like to be able to drop a circular area marker on the map, and edit the radius that it should cover in either kilometres or miles. Possibly it would be nice to either have the edge of the radius rendered, or the area covered could tint the map a shade of some colour.

Feature: Display Contour of Specified driving time

Comments:   I would like to be able to do the following : for a given specified location on the map, have google maps draw a contour line around this location corresponding to a given driving time.  So if I specified 45 minutes, I would see a (probably rather complicated) line appear on the map around my address; for any location inside this line, the driving time would be less than 45 minutes; for locations outside the line it would be more than 45 minutes. A related feature would be to have such a contour for distance by car, e.g. contour line showing 30 km away from address X by car.  This is different than the "radius" feature as that does not take into account the actual path taken.  The "distance travelled" contour would also not be the same as the "driving time" contour due

to speed limit and traffic light differences on the various roads.

Feature: Ability to send a placemark to a mobile phone, encoded as LMX via SMS

Comments: Nokia's new GPS equipped phones (N95, Navigator 6110) support placemarks and Places of Interest to be sent to the phone via SMS, email or Bluetooth encoded as LMX files. It would be great if I could  click a point on the map or an existing placemark and have it sent via SMS to my UK mobile phone. The UI for this should include an option for entering a mobile number, or use the number I have provided Google for my calendar notifications.

Feature: Access Street View from MyMaps

Comments: While I think that "street view" in general is messed up on google maps right now, I really need the feature to confirm the locations I am placing with street view and without it I'm hesitant to place my markers / pins!  Please bring easy access to street-view to MyMaps.

Feature: When "adding a destination to directions," be able to select a mymaps location.

Comments: If this is possible, instead of erasing it, please strike through and say it is possible with directions and how to do.  I often want to go from work, to gym, to home, and I want to be able to create a map of directions by selecting mymaps locations.  I also want to share good routes between multiple locations with friends.  Having the ability to add a destination by selecting the next destination of a mymap location would be faster than re-entering the address of the next "destination."

Feature: Avoid Highways and take highways in different legs a multi-leg directions trip between mymap locations.

Comments: I love being able to select directions from a mymap location.  I love adding a destination in a multi-leg trip.  I love avoiding highways.  However, sometimes you actually want to take the highway at 2 pm when traffic is good, and then avoid the highway at 6 pm when traffic is bad.  Currently, you have to avoid the highways for the entirety of multi-leg trips.  While this isn't ONLY a mymap problem, mymaps users I've met would like to see this feature -- especially if you can Add a Destination by Picking the next MyMap location instead of typing in another address.

Feature: A way to Lock-down a mymap Pin/location

Comments:  Many times have you accidentally dragged a mymap location on your laptop touchpad?  Man, that is annoying.  Now with the collaboration, this could happen without you knowing!  Please find a good way to lock down the mymap locations so they are not accidentally dragged.

Comments: Some form of place to leave notes for the other collaborators.

Feature: A way to check other collaborators revisions. (hopefully better than the google docs revision viewer)

Comments: I want to be able to see what other edits were done by collaborators.  The google docs revisions are nice, but can you please add a wikipedia style highlights of the edits made instead of having to search through the document / map to try and notice differences?
