Subject: API Tile Imagery Updates
Hi developers-

Some small imagery updates are now live.  API tiles changes include:

Israel: Major roads and cities. Due to data provider contacts, the API
coverage is much lower than what's now shown on maps.google.com.

Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania (and Peru on the way): New MapMaker coverage
for these countries.

World: Cities added to previously blank countries.

Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Zimbabwe: Street names
shown.

Europe: Street address ranges added at high zoom (e.g. zoom into
Paris, France).

Hi Pamela,
Thanks for the update :)
About Israel coverage - is it a temporary issue or a permanent one ?
Also will the coverage will stay in English only with the API or will
there be an option to switch to Hebrew mode also (regardless to the
coverage problem) ?

Thanks again,
Shay

Hi Shay-

Regarding Israel coverage- The API coverage depends on data provider
contracts, as always. In general, we're always trying to increase
coverage, and I can't speculate more than that.

Regarding Hebrew characters on the tiles-- Currently RTL languages
like Hebrew are disabled in the API, due to technical issues. They
should be enabled at some point in the future, and when that happens,
you'll also see translated tiles, assuming your browser setting is in
Hebrew.

Hi Pamela,

So I was pleased to browse Tel Aviv in Israel on Google Maps and
noticed all of the streets are there!  However, there are no street
labels.  Is this also due to a contract issue, or do you expect to be
able to label these streets that are already on GoogleMaps soon?

Thanks!

FWIIW, your imagery for Northern Michigan could be improved.  I
believe your competitors are using "i-cubed".

In case you did now know, it is Larry Page's home state.

Should I have used the issue tracker ?

Generally, any lack of data is either due to contracts or just current
unavailability of data, and we're always working to improve coverage.

Berry -- I'd like to keep the issue tracker as much to programmatic
issues as possible, for now.

It's a deal

To be fair & balanced, your imagery in Southern Michigan is superior:

http://www.polyarc.us/stitcher/?call=ann%20arbor%20mi&pair=VE%20aeria...

I suspect Digital Globe / GeoEye contracts prevent you from using "i-
cubed".  If not, "i-cubed" imagery in Northern Michigan is excellent.

But... the imagery in Northern Mississippi leaves a lot to be desired.

How about updating that one of these years? It's been the same low res
imagery since 2005.

I know Mississippi isn't the center of the earth (actually the A hole)
but how about cutting us a break?

Excellent aerial imagery does exist (Virtual Earth & AOL - same source
different filters) for your area

http://www.polyarc.us/stitcher/?call=holly%20springs%20ms&pair=VE%20a...

To check out other areas, use "Explore" menu.

Apparently legal and/or ecomonic obstacles exist.
